1. Using the screw provided, remove the plug(s) from the filler hole(s). Twist the screw into the plugs and pull out or increase the size of the vent holes to fit the filling needle. 2. Insert the steel filling tube through the appropriate filling hole, (see diagram above) and push into the cartridge. Continue pushing the steel filling tube until it reaches the other side of the cartridge. IMPORTANT – The cartridge contains a sponge and slight resistance may be felt. 3. SLOWLY inject approximately 20ml of ink (BC-01, BC-02, BX-02) or 7ml (BC-05) or until ink appears at the filling hole. 4. If or when ink overflows from filling hole or starts to leak from outlet hole, the cartridge is full. Stop injecting ink immediately 4. DO NOT reseal the filler holes. 5. Leave cartridge to stand overnight on a protective non-absorbent surface.
IMPORTANT: For best results, cartridge should be refilled whilst some ink remains Empty cartridges should be refilled immediately. This work is best done over the sink. |

Use your judgment and be careful not to let any debris from making the hole enter the internal workings of the cartridge. Failure to do so may damage the cartridge beyond repair. 2. Put the tip of the syringe with the correct colour of ink into the hole and SLOWLY inject ink – up to 20ml. 3. Seal the hole with tape and thoroughly clean syringe between colours or to store for future use. 4. Install the cartridge and run a priming cycle as per printer instructions.
ALTERNATIVE METHOD 1. Fill a syringe with 25ml of black or 20ml of the appropriate colour ink depending on which cartridge is to be filled. 2. Remove the needle from the syringe. 3. Invert the cartridge as shown in the diagram to show the ink exit hole and the pressure release button. 4. Push the syringe into the ink exit hole and tilt the syringe to the side. Pull back on the plunger and tilt/rotate the syringe until air flows into the syringe easily. 5. Pull back on the plunger until approx 3-4ml of air from the cartridge has bubbled up through the ink inside the syringe. This will form a slight vacuum in the cartridge. Then push on the syringe plunger gently to inject 3-4ml of ink then stop. Repeat this step 5-10 times to ‘pump’ the air out of the cartridge and inject the ink into it. 6. When the refill process is complete, the syringe will be filled with air but the plunger will be more or less in the same position you started. Pull back one last time to pull a last little bit of air from the cartridge and then remove the syringe from the cartridge. DO NOT PRESS THE PRESSURE RELEASE BUTTON INTENTIONALLY OR BY ACCIDENT 8. Install the cartridge and run a priming cycle as per printer instructions.
IMPORTANT Empty cartridges should be refilled immediately. This work is best done over the sink.

1. Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill. 2. Peal off the top label. 3. You will notice three small holes (too small for a syringe needle to get into). Drill each hole larger with a thumb drill. 4. Fill the syringe with 6 ml. of colour ink ( Cyan, Yellow & Magenta). 5. Very SLOWLY & CAREFULLY inject ink into each chamber until the sponge full 6. When finished, replace the top label or cover with tape. 7. Replace the cartridge and run 1 - 3 cleaning cycles as per printer instructions.
For best results, leave cartridge in printer for 8 hours after refilling so the ink can saturate the entire sponge. Note: Each time the cartridge is removed from the printer an "empty cartridge" message appears and a blinking amber light will flash on the printer. Holding the paper feed button down for 3-5 sec. will allow you to override the counter. IMPORTANT – For best results, cartridge should be refilled whilst some ink remains. 1. Cover the outlet hole with the orange outlet seal that came with the cartridge (a rubber band will hold this in place) to prevent ink loss during refilling or with your finger over the outlet port while wearing latex gloves. 2. Push the Sealing Ball into the cartridge using a ball point pen or something similar. If you can't see the ball just above the "push" then peel back the top label on the reservoir side of the cartridge to expose the Sealing Ball. 3. Attach the needle to the syringe and fill with the correct colour ink. 4. Slowly inject approximately 13 ml. of Black Ink or 6 ml of Colour Ink slowly into the filling hole until the chamber is almost full. Unused ink may be returned to the bottle. 5. Seal the filling hole with either a plug or some strong adhesive tape. 6. Remove the orange outlet seal (or your finger) from the outlet hole. 7. Replace the cartridge and run 1 - 3 cleaning cycles as per printer instructions. 8. If you have trouble getting your cartridge to print and the sponge side of the cartridge looks dry then drill a hole into the top of the sponge side of the cartridge. Stick the syringe needle into the sponge and fill with ink. You do not need to seal this hole. If you are filling cartridges to use later, leave the orange outlet seal rubber banded onto the cartridge. This will prevent your sponge from drying out.
Note: On the CLI-8 and PGI-5 series cartridges, there is an electronic counter embedded in a small computer chip/board. This counter starts at a high number and decreases for every character printed. Eventually, the counter reaches zero. At this point, an error message is generated by the printer. If you click "OK" to the error message, the printer will continue to print. If you have trouble getting your printer to print because it thinks the cartridges are empty. Look on your printer for an orange blinking light. This is your reset button, usually the paper feed button also. Hold this button in for 5 seconds until the light goes out. Note: this will not reset the ink level back to full it will simply disable the counter.

1. Put the cartridge on some paper towels in an area where you can tolerate a spill.
2. Remove the identification label from the top of the cartridge. 3. Insert the needle into the appropriate filling hole and push halfway into the cartridge. Please ensure you are injecting the correct colour into the correct hole. It doesn’t matter on the black but it does with the colour cartridge. 4. Slowly inject the ink. If ink appears at the filling hole, gently pull back on the plunger to remove the excess ink. Blot the printhead with absorbent material until it stops dripping before moving onto the next colour.
5. Do not replace the identification label. 6. Ensure the printhead has stopped dripping before returning the cartridge to the printer. Replace the cartridge and run 1 - 3 cleaning cycles as per printer instructions. 7. Clean the syringe & needle thoroughly for future use. Understanding Your Printer's Estimated Ink Level: The newer Hewlett Packard printers have included in the software that comes with their printers, a "toolbox" that includes a section called Estimated Ink Level. It’s a great tool that allows you to keep track of how much ink is left in your cartridges so you don't start a big print job and run out of ink in the middle of it. The only problem is for those who wish to refill their own cartridges. If you refill your cartridge or have someone else refill your cartridge, it will read as low or empty when you try to print with the cartridge. How does HP do it? They started embedding a serial number in the contact strip located on the back of the cartridge. The printer remembers that serial number and gives the message of low or out of ink. The internal memory is located in the printers’ firmware and is not in the software. It will remember the previous two cartridges ink level. The following pages list the various methods for the cartridges we know about. Reset Method 1: 1. Following the diagram at right, place a piece of adhesive tape covering the only the blue coloured contact (1 copper square). Make sure that only that contact is covered. *Please note that the contacts shown are coloured for illustration purposes only. 2. Place cartridge in the printer. The printer may tell you that there is a problem with your cartridge. Ignore this message. The printer may print an alignment page. If so, allow it to do so.
3. Take the cartridge out of the printer. Leave tape on first contact. Place another piece of tape over the red coloured contact. Make sure that only that contact is covered. *Please note that the contacts shown are coloured for illustrative purposes only. 4. Repeat step 3. 5. Take the cartridge out of the printer for the final time. Take the remaining tape off and place back in the printer. The estimated ink level in the toolbox should read full. WARNING: Take care not to lose tape covering contacts inside the printer. This method is used at your own risk.
Reset Method 2: If Reset Method 1 did not work on your printer, you can cycle cartridges through to reset the level. You will need two extra cartridges and the one you refilled. First, put the refilled cartridge in the printer. Allow it to recognize the cartridge and print an alignment page. Take that cartridge out and place in the second cartridge. Allow it to recognize it and print an alignment page. Take the second cartridge out and place the third cartridge in. Allow it to recognize and print an alignment page. Take the third cartridge out. Place the refilled cartridge back in the printer. The estimated ink level should be reset to full. |

However we DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU DO THIS. 1. Attach the needle to the syringe and identify the placement of the correct hole for the colour you are filling based on the diagram right. 2. Once you have identified the correct filling hole for the colour and cartridge you are filling, push the needle through the label into the cartridge. You will feel some resistance due to the sponge inside, this is normal. 3. SLOWLY inject ink until the sponge is saturated (approximately 3ml ink). 4. Use adhesive tape to seal up the hole made in the cartridge label before continuing with other colours to avoid contamination. NOTE: The cartridge will leak if this is not done. 4. Once done, thoroughly rinse the syringe before using with any other colour inks. 5. Reinstall cartridge and run 1-3 test pages as per manufacturers instructions.
IMPORTANT We recommend refilling prior to the cartridge becoming empty. Empty cartridges should be refilled immediately. This work is best done over the sink. |
